North Acres Neighborhood Association (NAHA) Community Update

This November, District 1 voters will elect a new representative to Austin City Council for the first time in eight years — Council Member Natasha Harper-Madison is term-limited and will leave office in January. Six candidates have qualified for the ballot, and we're bringing some of them straight to North Acres so you can hear from them directly, ask questions, and make an informed decision before you vote.

The Details

📅 Tuesday, September 22, 2026

🕖 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM

📍 Holy Word Lutheran Church Community Center

Each candidate will have a short window to introduce themselves, share their platform, and talk about how they plan to support North Acres and the rest of District 1 if elected. There will be time for neighbor questions as well.

Who's Coming

We've invited all six District 1 candidates. As of now, we expect the following candidates to attend:

  • Alexandria Anderson

  • Steven Brown

  • Michael Nahas

  • Misael Ramos (tentative — still confirming)

(Attendance is subject to change based on candidates' schedules — we'll post any updates as we get them.)

Get to Know the Candidates

Alexandria Anderson

A small business owner and retired professional sprinter, Alexandria has spent over a decade in neighborhood leadership — including nine years as Chair/Vice Chair of the Martin Luther King Neighborhood Association and five years co-chairing the East MLK Contact Team. Her platform centers on transparency, fiscal responsibility, and people-first leadership at City Hall.

Steven Brown

A lifelong East Austin resident and healthcare professional, Steven is running on affordability, accountability, and stronger community engagement from City Council. He's raised concerns about District 1's leadership being unresponsive to residents and wants to bring "real representation and action" back to City Hall. 🔗 brownforaustind1.com

Michael Nahas

A current board member of the City's Economic Prosperity Commission with a background in computer science and economics, Michael is running a finance-focused campaign, arguing that City Council needs more financial expertise to manage the city's budget and pension obligations effectively. 🔗 michaeldnahas.com

Misael Ramos

A community organizer and coalition-builder with two decades of experience in Austin, Misael currently serves as president of the Rogers Washington Holy Cross Neighborhood Association. His platform focuses on housing affordability, transit, labor, and public safety, with an emphasis on community land trusts and anti-displacement measures. 🔗 misaelforaustin.com

Two other candidates are also on the ballot but are not currently scheduled to attend our meeting. You can learn more about their platforms here:

Why This Matters

District 1 covers a huge swath of Central and East Austin, including our own North Acres neighborhood. Whoever wins this seat will have a direct say in issues that affect us daily — housing affordability, infrastructure, public safety, and how our neighborhood grows over the next four years. This is a rare chance to talk to candidates face-to-face before Election Day on November 3, 2026.

Questions or Can't Make It?
